“The worst rascals among other peoples” (Tacitus); “You Jews are of your father the devil” (New Testament, Book of John); “this damned rejected race of Jews” (Martin Luther), “Do not take the Jews and Christians as allies” (Quran).  Hatred of the Jews is embedded in Western civilisation and has taken many forms over the centuries. How did it begin and why is it so pervasive? In this session, we will focus mainly on the historical roots of antisemitism and some of its more egregious manifestations over the centuries.
